Street Child believes that every child deserves the right to safety and to be empowered through education. Working in some of the poorest areas in the world, it strives to ensure that every child has the chance to go to school and learn.
Street Child began work in 2008 in Sierra Leone, supporting children who were on the streets, and has gone on to support orphans and vulnerable children in Liberia, a country also badly affected by Ebola, in Nigeria, helping children fleeing the ongoing conflict, and in Nepal, where many children were orphaned in the 2015 earthquake.
From Babies with Love funded the establishment of three Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) in one of the affected states, Borno, which in the last year have supported 1,300 children.
Each CFS has a trained Child Support Coordinator, so the children can progressively overcome traumatic events, a Social Worker to identify an appropriate care-giver for the children (including identifying and training foster parents); and a set of learning materials and equipment for the children.
This was the first time Street Child carried out this type of work in Nigeria, our grant acted as seed funding.
As a result of the work Street Child has carried out with our grant, it has been able to evidence the impact and has secured additional funding of £1m, from institutional donors such as UNICEF, and will be supporting more than 40,000 vulnerable children with education and protection. We’re delighted to see our impact leveraged to such great effect.
Uganda hosts over 1 million South Sudanese refugees who have fled from five years of civil war. 61% of the refugees are children, putting huge pressure on the education system. 350,000 South Sudanese refugee children are out of school.
Palabek is the newest refugee settlement in the north of Uganda and home to more than 40,000 refugees, with more arriving every day. Whilst immediate life-saving needs have been met, there is an enormous need for education provision; Palabek has 28,000 children who are currently served by only seven primary schools and one secondary school.
We are funding Street Child to support 1,400 children in two new schools in Palabek, as well as providing Child Friendly Spaces for afterschool programmesat the schools. Street Child is carrying out this work in partnership with a local NGO specialisedin child protection.
Construction of the schools, recruitment and training of the teachers has taken place, and the first school opened its doors in February 2019.
We're delighted to work with the Street Child team and support their incredible programmes.
Street Child's CEO Tom Dannatt told us “we’re thrilled to partner with From Babies with Love. In addition to your funding contribution to our vital work, we’re excited about your pioneering social enterprise model, and working together creatively to help thousands of the world’s most vulnerable children.”
